To anyone paying attention, reality is now painfully obvious. These bankrupt, insolvent governments have just about run out of fingers to plug the dikes. And history shows that, once this happens, governments fall back on a very limited playbook:
1. Direct confiscation
As Cyprus showed us, bankrupt governments are quite happy to plunder people’s bank accounts, especially if it’s a wealthy minority.
Aside from bank levies, though, this also includes things like [...]

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, the wealthiest American, said on “some days” he wishes the U.S. political system were like England’s, so that President Barack Obama could have “slightly more power.”
Gates was asked for his assessment of President Obama’s job performance during an interview at Politico’s “Playbook Cocktails” event.
“Some days I wish we had a system like the U.K. where, you know, the party in power [...]

The Obama administration is nearing completion of a detailed counterterrorism manual that is designed to establish clear rules for targeted-killing operations but leaves open a major exemption for the CIA’s campaign of drone strikes in Pakistan, U.S. officials said.
The carve-out would allow the CIA to continue pounding al-Qaeda and Taliban targets for a year or more before the agency is forced [...]
A month back I warned that the US political class was adopting the very same tactics employed by EU politicians in combating our growing economic/ financial problems.
Those tactics are as follows:
Stage a meeting/ talk
Spread rumors that a solution had been reached (verbal intervention to prop the markets up)
Fail to address any real issues or provide solutions
End the meeting with a PR campaign that much was accomplished without providing any details
Wait [...]
Nassim Taleb: Don’t Be Fooled By The Fiscal Cliff, Stabilization Won’t Save Us From Economic Turmoil
THE fiscal cliff is not really a “cliff”; the entire country won’t fall into the ocean if we hit it. Some automatic tax cuts will expire; the government will be forced to cut some expenditures. The cliff is really just a red herring.
Likewise, any last-minute deal to avoid the spending cuts and tax increases scheduled [...]
The inevitable end of that supremely flawed monetarist experiment – the Eurozone:
“Each subsequent “save” of the European debt crisis has been devised by the Eurocrats coming up with some new amalgamation of an entity that is more complex than its predecessor that is designed to project size, strength, and confidence to investors that the problem has been solved. Raoul, a friend of mine who resides in Spain, put it best:
“Let’s [...]
A week after losing the presidential election to President Obama, Mitt Romney blamed his overwhelming electoral loss on what he said were big “gifts” that the president had bestowed on loyal Democratic constituencies — including young voters, African-Americans and Hispanics.
In a conference call on Wednesday afternoon with his national finance committee, Mr. Romney said that the president had followed the “old playbook” of wooing specific interest groups — “especially the [...]
Mitt Romney plans to turn himself into a one-man truth squad during the first presidential debate next week, casting President Barack Obama as someone who can’t be trusted to stick to the facts or keep his promises.
Top Republicans are telegraphing Romney’s hard-line strategy for his faceoff with Obama, according to Mike Allen’s Playbook in POLITICO on Thursday. The debate plan comes during a presidential cycle where media fact-checkers have held [...]

From Market Anthropology:
Although I take great pride in developing my comparative work, it likely is misunderstood by many in how I apply it, benefit from it, and walk between different models.
Like most things in life, it is the process that defines the form. Too abstract – and you lose perspective. Too much detail – and you lose emotion.
For lack of a better analogy, I work with analogs much like a [...]
(CNN) – It’s sacrilege to some Apple fanboys. It’s also something none of Apple’s competitors have been able to claim since that “magical” day in early 2010.
But when Microsoft unveiled the Surface tablet (actually a pair of them) Monday, the software company clearly had one ultimate goal: to make a tablet that’s better than the iPad.
By most standards, Apple has crushed its tablet rivals that have tried to compete feature-for-feature. No single tablet running Google’s [...]
With only about four hours into the Election Day voting, members of the Milwaukee Democratic Party claim that calls are going out to voters telling them if they’d signed the recall, they didn’t need to vote today.
Milwaukee County Dem Chair Sachin Chheda said that Walker supporters can’t get through the day without “cheating.”
“This latest lowlife sleaze comes on the heels of countless reports from around the state of various Republican [...]

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — The chances that Barack Obama will be limited to one term as president increased significantly with last week’s unemployment report.
The report for May showed a new uptick in unemployment, to 8.2%, and seemed to indicate that economic and employment growth will remain sluggish between now and the election in November, especially as the situation in Europe continues to worsen.
There’s not much [...]

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (MarketWatch) — Today we’ll discuss investment strategies for America’s new Age of Austerity. Remember: Austerity will dominate the U.S. and global economies for years.
That point was punctuated with the arrival of the new book from Martin Pring, one of America’s leading financial analysts: “Investing in the Second Lost Decade.” His opener is a grabber: “Are you prepared for another lost decade?” Are [...]

The Fed and ECB (European Central Bank) have taken notes from the exact playbook in dealing with the global financial crisis. People tend to believe that these are somehow fully set government agencies but in reality, they are designed to protect their number one constituency group. The Fed and ECB have the primary mission of protecting select financial institutions. At their core they are where the bankers bank. I was examining the [...]

They (Norm Ornstein) dont get any smarter when it comes to knowledge about the history of
the inner workings of Congress.

Rep. Allen West, a Florida Republican, was recently captured on video asserting that there are “78 to 81” Democrats in Congress who are members of the Communist Party. Of course, it’s not unusual for some renegade lawmaker from either side of the aisle to say something outrageous. What made [...]

So far, 2012 has been a banner year for the stock market, which recently closed the books on its best first quarter in 14 years. But Casey Research Chairman Doug Casey insists that time is running out on the ticking time bombs. Next week when Casey Research’s spring summit gets underway, Casey will open the first general session addressing the question of whether the [...]

The “dumb money” indicator has become more neutral suggesting that the bulls have lost enthusiasm for this bull market. As can be seen in figure 1 (below), the indicator has dropped below the upper trading band (green arrow). From this perspective, the playbook becomes real simple. If the indicator moves back above the upper trading band, then investors are putting risk back on, and all in likelihood, this would represent [...]

While the Second Greek Bailout may or may not be complete (depending on whether we get a credit event as a result of it), Germany can and will walk from the Euro if it needs to. This is the unforeseen black swan everyone is ignoring.
Obviously, Germany wouldn’t want to do this as it would result in Germany being blamed for the Euro failing. So thus far, “Plan A” for Germany has been [...]

It’s like a ride in an amusement park and when you go on it you think it’s real, because that’s how powerful our minds are. The ride goes up and down, round and round, it has thrills and chills, and it’s very brightly colored and it’s very loud. And it’s fun for a while. Some have been on the ride a long time and they [...]

The first image of a BlackBerry 10 Superphone has leaked, and it comes exclusively from CrackBerry.
When RIM’s 2012 product roadmap was revealed, it was missing any reference to such a device. But in the words of CrackBerry’s Kevin Michaluk, we can see that it resembles a “phonified PlayBook” with rounded corners and an all-black design.
CrackBerry indicates that the London is slated for a UK release while two other phone models, the “Laguna” and [...]
Back in January 2010, when in complete disgust of the farce that the market has become, and where fundamentals were completely trumped by central bank intervention, we said, that “Zero Hedge long ago gave up discussing corporate fundamentals due to our long-held tenet that currently the only relevant pieces of financial information are contained in the Fed’s H.4.1, H.3 statements.” This capitulation in light of the advent of the Central Planner of [...]

Ron Paul will ride the GOP Bull as long, and as far, as he can because if he doesn’t, he won’t maintain as much of a media presence. This is a sad state of affairs — that the media has become an apologist not only for the entrenched government but the corporatocracy that purchases its TV advertisements and funds the political debates. As a result, Americans must [...]
If you think you’ve already heard everything there is to know about Mitt Romney, think again. A 200-page document that appears to be Sen. John McCain’s entire 2008 election-year opposition research file on the former Massachusetts governor hit the Internet with a vengeance Tuesday evening. And it’s an eye-opener.
The file explores everything from the assessed value of Romney’s house (“$3.162 million”) to his views on the Boy Scouts’ ban of homosexuals (“publicly opposed [...]
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi on Tuesday launched political grenades at Mitt Romney, arguing that Republicans haven’t coalesced behind the GOP frontrunner because they don’t believe he can beat President Barack Obama in November.
The House’s top Democrat repeatedly jabbed at the former Massachusetts governor during an hour-long interview hosted by POLITICO and taunted the GOP for a slate of presidential contenders that she said was “not exactly what you would [...]

As the IIF continues to believe it is negotiating with Greece on voluntary haircuts and Ireland follows the Greek playbook by threatening referenda and asking for bailout term adjustments, is it any wonder that the words of a supposedly united Europe ring hollow in the ears of investors who seem to expect a Euro breakup sooner rather than later. Deutsche Bank’s credit team see two noteworthy similarities between the [...]
