Top donors threaten to quit giving money

With red state Democratic Senators remaining skittish about embracing Obama’s gun proposals, at least two top Democratic donors are stepping forward and vowing to withhold any and all future financial contributions from any Democrats who don’t support the centerpiece of Obama’s plan: Expanded background checks.

Kenneth Lerer, a New York businessman who is chairman of Buzzfeed.com, and David Bohnett, a technology entrepreneur and philanthopist based in Los Angeles, are both major financial supporters [...]

NEW YAHOO CHIEF HELPED DEM FUNDRAISING DRIVES

SAN FRANCISCO — Yahoo’s choice of Marissa Mayer as its new chief executive brings a politically savvy executive to the top of the troubled online company.

Mayer, 37, is a longtime Google executive who has participated in Democratic political fundraising drives.

In 2010, she held a fundraiser at her house for President Barack Obama and has given to Obama annually since 2007.

Last year, Mayer contributed $35,800 to the Obama Victory Fund 2012.

Mayer is an active Democratic [...]

James Carville: ‘The Tea Party Is Over’

Liberal political consultant James Carville sent a fundraising email to supporters of upstate New York congresswoman Louise Slaughter entitled “The Tea Party is Over.” In the email, Mr. Carville claimed the Tea Party isn’t entirely finished, but he said they can be eliminated by donating to “proud Democrats like Louise Slaughter.”

“These Tea Party Republicans have worn out their welcome. But I’m telling you — getting rid of ‘em won’t be easy. [...]

Throw Your TV Out the Window

With our political system now completely financialized, the plebs were mined for cash in a Hollywood “sweepstakes” lottery whereby thestar-struck winner dined with the stars and political elite. NPR called this recent gimmick the “latest innovation in political fundraising.” If you don’t play you can’t win, even if that means missing out on a chance to rub shoulders with a vacuous Hollywood star and a corrupt, self-serving sock-puppet politician portraying the [...]

Tea Party stuns with $12.2m cash haul

Sen. Richard Lugar, who lost his primary fight in Indiana Tuesday, doesn’t need any reminders of the tea party movement’s ongoing appeal. But for those who do, another one surfaced recently in the tax return of the tea party movement’s biggest umbrella organization.

The Woodstock, Ga.-based Tea Party Patriots reported raising  $12.2 million for the year ended May 31, 2011. That vaults them into the ranks of some of the most successful conservative [...]

President Obama jets to Florida today for a mix of official and political business that will steal some headlines in the Sunshine State and line his campaign coffers with at least $4 million.

The act of presidential piggybacking — coupling official duties, in this case a speech on the economy, with political fundraising — was not pioneered by Obama but is prominently [...]

BIG DONORS TURN AGAINST

By Nathaniel Popper, Los Angeles TimesSeptember 30, 2011

Reporting from New York—

The race is on to tap one of the most vital sources of campaign cash — Wall Street — and the early results are not looking good for President Obama.

The president’s campaign struggled this week to sell out a fundraising dinner Friday at Manhattan’s gilded Four Seasons restaurant despite its being hosted by America’s No. 1 capitalist, Warren [...]

U.S. Finances Are ‘Unsustainable,’ Obama Says at Facebook Town Hall Event

President Barack Obama, on a cross- country trip to sell his deficit reduction plan, said yesterday that the nation’s finances are “unsustainable.”

At a campaign-style town hall meeting at the headquarters of Facebook Inc., Obama described the House Republicans’ budget plan as “fairly radical,” and said members of both political parties in Washington need to work together to start reducing the federal deficit in a “balanced way.”

“We have an unsustainable situation,” [...]
