David Cameron is planning new powers to muzzle Islamic hate preachers accused of provoking terrorist outrages such as the killing of soldier Lee Rigby.
The Prime Minister wants to stop extremist clerics using schools, colleges, prisons and mosques to spread their ‘poison’ and is to head a new Tackling Extremism and Radicalisation Task Force (TERFOR) made up of senior Ministers, MI5, police and moderate religious leaders.
The high-powered group will study a [...]
LONDON – Britain’s government is setting up a new terrorism task force to tackle radical preachers and extremism, officials said Sunday, days after suspects apparently linked to extremist Islamist activists brutally killed a British soldier in a London street.
Home Secretary Theresa May said the group will look at whether new powers and laws are needed to clamp down on religious leaders and organizations who promote extremist messages and who target [...]

Best known for its honest and sometimes scathing consumer reviews of restaurants, Yelp has now expanded to include inmates ratings for prisons.
Prisoners, their lawyers and family members are joining the growing band of internet reviewers on Yelp who critique everything from bowling alleys to plumbers.
And with typical candor, reviews make plain that employees at New York’s Sing Sing Correctional facility are the ‘most unprofessional staff in the world and the [...]
I say this with much sadness.
The beacon of light that was America is on its last embers.
Smothered out by excessive greed of the corporate-government alliance of the new paradigm.
Once,we were supposedly all created equal. Now we are all rated based on our bank account.Your rights as Americans are now based on your ability to pay.

Mr. Muhammad and his followers had been killed by the C.I.A., the first time it had deployed a Predator drone in Pakistan to carry out a “targeted killing.” The target was not a top operative of Al Qaeda, but a Pakistani ally of the Taliban who led a tribal rebellion and was marked by Pakistan as an enemy of the state. In a secret deal, the C.I.A. had [...]
(MoneyWatch) Thousands of Americans are sent to jail not for committing a crime, but because they can’t afford to pay for traffic tickets, medical bills and court fees.
If that sounds like a debtors’ prison, a legal relic which was abolished in this country in the 1830s, that’s because it is. And courts and judges in states across the land are violating the Constitution by incarcerating people for being unable to [...]
Cities continue to get Tanks they don’t need in nationwide police militarization trend. Why??
Why is Obama coming out with somethig called prolonged detention. Where you can be picked up and held in prison for 10 years. I guess if you disagree with the Obama agenda you will end up in one of his Fema prisons.
Why is the DHS stocking up with all of the guns and ammo? What’s up?

MOSCOW – Russia has prepared the “Guantanamo list” of U.S. officials who will be denied entry visas, officials in Moscow said Friday, the latest apparent retaliation for a U.S. law imposing sanctions on Russians over the death of an activist lawyer.

Tax fraud appears to be a popular billion-dollar pastime in the nation’s prisons, but the Internal Revenue Service is catching on.

On the day that California’s Governor Jerry Brown asks federal judges to lift an order to release prisoners to reduce overcrowding, this brief clip seemed extremely appropriate when considering just why it is that the US prison population is so high (as we noted most recently here). Professor Daniel D’Amico provides some insightful color, noting that fully 24 percent of inmates in U.S. prisons are non-violent drug offenders. The drug war has been [...]
The Guantanamo Bay detention centre could be closed and the 166 inmates could be sent to prisons in the US, according to a new government report.
“This report demonstrates that if the political will exists, we could finally close Guantanamo without imperilling our national security,” said Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein, the Senate Intelligence Committee chairwoman who released the recommendations.
The Government Accountability Office study shows that US prisons already hold 373 prisoners [...]

Vitamin B3 could be the new weapon in the fight against superbugs such as MRSA, researchers have suggested.

B3 increases the numbers and efficacy of neutrophils, white blood cells that can kill and eat harmful bugs.
The study, in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, could lead to a “major change in treatment”, a UK expert said.

The United States leads the world in the rate of incarcerating its own citizens. We imprison more of our own people than any other country on earth, including China which has four times our population, or in human history. And now, a new Pew report announces that we are keeping even nonviolent inmates behind bars for increasingly longer terms.
This comes at a time when soaring costs of prisons are wreaking [...]

At a time when the entire country is being tested by the economic crisis, some people are quite literally on the verge of destitution and hunger. At a time when the empty state coffers can not support any concept of a welfare state, with “frozen” financing towards education and health, the prison system could not be an exception.
The financing for many prisons has decreased to a minimum for some months [...]

Crime is down in Louisiana, but the state still holds the ignominious title of “the world’s prison capital.”
An exposé by the New Orleans Times-Picayune found that Louisiana incarcerates more people per capita than any other state or country in the world. One out of every 86 adults is behind bars, which is nearly double the U.S. average.
This means Louisiana’s prison rate is nearly three times higher than Iran’s, seven [...]

UNITED NATIONS — About 4,000 accused supporters of former dictator Moamer Kadhafi are still being held in Libyan militia detention centers, often in secret and many are tortured, a UN envoy said Thursday.

It is not just American brutality in handling education loans. Brutal are also our numerous wars and our prison system. Our incarceration of our own citizens is unmatched anywhere in the world. Brutality is usually the face of Fascism:
“in 1980, there were about two hundred and twenty people incarcerated for every hundred thousand Americans; by 2010, the number had more than tripled, to seven hundred and thirty-one. No other country [...]

Something caught my eye the other day: Pat Robertson, the high priest of the religious right, had some startling things to say about drugs.

A presentation on March 13th by Corrections Corp of America touted the coming growth of the private prison business. It was geared toward potential investors and had a very bullish outlook on locking people up for profit, which is a good thing for the economy—and since we all want the economy to be good, yay, locking people up for profit!
The presentation, in glowing tones, spoke mainly about how the private prison business [...]
The Global Commission on Drug Policy says it’s “very weird” that Canada is taking a tougher line on marijuana when governments across the globe are reconsidering the war on drugs.
In an open letter Wednesday to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, the Brazil-based commission calls on Canada to stop pursuing the “destructive, expensive and ineffective” prohibition of pot.
Louise Arbour, a former Supreme Court of Canada judge, former Brazilian president Fernando Cardoso, former [...]
