TEPCO reported today that more than eight tons of radioactive water has leaked from the number four reactor at the Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear plant after a frozen pipe burst. The electric company said none of the water reached outside of the stricken reactor containment building.

TEPCO failed to winterize the reactor’s cooling system and this oversight led to fractures in pipes due to [...]
FUKUSHIMA, Oct. 17 — Mochizuki of the Fukushima Diary website has provided a summary of an Oct. 15 report by NHK that reveals “it turned out to be true that water vapor (steam) was splashing (erupting) from underground in June” at Fukushima Daiichi’s No. 1 reactor.
“According to Tepco, it was splashing from underground in June, but now it’s stopped,” the summary continues.

Workers at Japan’s Fukushima plant say the ground under the facility is cracking and radioactive steam is escaping through the fissures. They also say pipes and at least one reactor were seriously damaged before the tsunami hit the area in March. RT talks to Christopher Busby of the European Committee on Radiation Risks.

Radiation Expert: Huge Quantities of Radiation Are Still Being Released from Fukushima … And Radiation Levels In Some Parts of Tokyo Are Higher than In the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone
Huge Quantities of Radiation Are Still Being Released By Fukushima
Radiation expert Dr. Chris Busby says that huge quantities of radiation – 1013 or 10 trillion becquerels per hour – are still being released from Fukushima.

Countries across the world shunned Japanese food imports Thursday as radioactive steam leaked from a disaster-struck nuclear plant, straining nerves in Tokyo.
The grim toll of dead and missing from Japan’s monster quake and tsunami on March 11 topped 26,000, as hundreds of thousands remained huddled in evacuation shelters and fears grew in the megacity of Tokyo over water safety.

I have not seen any official explanation for the hydrogen explosion at unit 4 and the implications assuming the source was the fuel stored in the pool. There is only mention of the fires and the possibility of lubricating oil as a source. I believe there must have been two explosions as initially it was reported that there was a hole in the roof [...]
Japanese villagers advised by government not to drink water due to radioactive iodine levels
“TOKYO — Japan’s Health Ministry says it has advised a village near a crippled nuclear plant not to drink tap water due to elevated levels of radioactive iodine.
Ministry spokesman Takayuki Matsuda said Sunday that radioactive iodine three times the normal level was detected in Iitate, a village of about 6,000 people 30 kilometers [...]
(Reuters) – A sample of tap water from the Japanese capital shows a tiny level of radioactive iodine after an earthquake and tsunami damaged a nuclear power plant 240 km (150 miles) north of Tokyo, the government said on Saturday.
The sample contained 1.5 becquerals per kg of iodine 131, well below the tolerable limit for food and drink of 300 becquerals per kg, the government [...]
Japan’s nuclear crisis at the Fukushima No. 1 power station showed no signs of abating Wednesday, five days after a mega earthquake crippled it, with the focus shifting to how to address the possible overheating of pools that store spent fuel rods at the already troubled No. 3 and No. 4 reactors.
What appeared to be smoke coming from the No. 3 reactor in the morning [...]
Government regulators knew of a heightened risk of explosion in the type of nuclear reactors used at the Fukushima plant in Japan from the moment they went into operation.

Safety inspectors at Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) in the United States warned as early as 1972 that the General Electric reactors, which did away with the traditional large containment domes, were more vulnerable to explosion and more [...]
(CNN) — U.S. Navy personnel are taking precautionary measures after instruments aboard an aircraft carrier docked in Japan detected low levels of radioactivity from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, the Navy said Tuesday.
The USS George Washington was docked for maintenance in Yokosuka, about 175 miles (280 kilometers) from the plant, when instruments detected the radiation at 7 a.m. Tuesday (6 p.m. ET Monday), the [...]
From Reuters:
Radiation levels have risen above the safety limit around Tokyo Electric Power Co’s (TEPCO) nuclear plant hit by a massive earthquake and the company has informed the government of an “emergency situation,” Kyodo agency reported on Sunday.
It did not mean an immediate threat to human health, the company said.
The company said earlier that it had started releasing steam from a reactor at the plant. [...]
TOKYO, March 13, Kyodo
Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Sunday another reactor of its quake-hit Fukushima nuclear power plants had lost its cooling functions, while at least 15 people at a nearby hospital were found to have been exposed to radioactivity.
The utility supplier notified the government early Sunday morning that the No. 3 reactor at the No. 1 Fukushima plant had lost the ability to cool [...]
Radiation levels at damaged Fukushima-Daiichi nuke plant are continuing to rise… Radiation 1,000 times higher than normal detected. Ministry official: ‘Possibility of radioactive leak’…
US military DID NOT provide any coolant… Earlier, Hillary Clinton said Air Force ‘assets’ had been used to do so…
TOKYO, March 12, Kyodo
