Bill Maher said something on HBO’s Real Time Friday that Barack Obama’s fans in the media didn’t consider when they promoted the former junior senator from Illinois to the White House.
“This president wouldn’t be president if they had caught him” smoking pot. “He’d still be a community organizer” (video follows with transcript and commentary):

Edison loves big data. Its idea of an average day is simulating a supernova explosion, measuring the expanding universe’s rate of acceleration. Or modeling 150 years of Earth’s future climate change — in three dimensions.
When fully deployed later this year, Edison will perform as many as 2 quadrillion operations a second. How big is that number? Two quadrillion cups of water would fill Lake Tahoe twice.
Tracking every trade, in real [...]

On his Friday HBO program, “Real Time” host Bill Maher said what many people on the left have been reluctant to say: that he opposes the Second Amendment guarantee of the right to bear arms.
Maher complained his side would not come out and say that, making the argument a “constant center-right debate.”
“I’m so sorry, but this is the problem with the gun debate — it is that [...]

Some members of Congress apparently don’t like to be reminded about how much debt the country continues to rack up.

“The dashboard,” instantaneously mines data from the NYPD’s vast collection of arrest records, emergency 911 calls, more than 3,000 security cameras, license plate readers and portable radiation detectors and aggregates it into a user-friendly, readable form in the control room.
Eventually, that data will be able to be seen in real time by officers on laptops in their squad cars and on mobile devices as they walk their beat.
The minutes of the US Federal Reserve released on Wednesday are an essential read for those interested in a real time snapshot of the complexity of modern day central banking. They are also a cautionary note for all who believe that, acting on their own, today’s hyper-active central banks can engineer good economic outcomes. Read more
Bill Maher on HBO’s Real Time Friday might have said one of the most disgraceful things uttered during the 2012 campaign season.

During a recent appearance on the StarTalk Radio Show, Real Time host Bill Maher expressed his desire to see more people killed via abortion, suicides and the death penalty because “the planet is too crowded and we need to promote death.”
Asked by host Neil deGrasse Tyson what he thought about the death penalty and abortion, Maher re-affirmed his support for both, remarking, “The Pope is [...]
The big monthly jobs report doesn’t come out until Friday, but no need to wait until then to know September’s unemployment rate: 8.1%.
At least, that’s the best guess of economistsRegis Barnichon andChristopher Nekarda, who in a paper last month laid out a new method for forecasting the unemployment rate. Mr. Barnichon, of the Spanish research institute CREI, and Mr. Nakarda, of theFederal Reserve, plan to start posting unemployment projections based on the new technique [...]
Iranian clerics’ attempts to curb speculation in the Rial and stabilize the currency appear to have backfired as the un-official (real) Rial rate traded as low as 34,250 Rial to the USD this morning – a massive 20% plunge. Demand for gold is surging (as Tehran exchange volume is up almost 18% today) as the population appears to be readying itself for hyperinflationary death – as we wrote yesterday, it really [...]

The host of HBO”s “Real Time,” which returns from its summer hiatus tonight, has found himself, his comedy and his opinions in the spotlight more than ever before, thanks, in part, to having inserted himself into the political process in a major way. In February, Maher contributed $1 million to Priorities USA Action, a super PAC supportive of President Barack Obama’s reelection. As a result, he’s been billed as a campaign operative [...]
Vice President Joe Biden will take questions from reporters on a White House press call today, and as has been the case in the past, the on-the-record conversation will be embargoed until the end of the call.
The curious caveat — who would write an article during the middle of the call? — is a product of the post-Twitter presidential campaign, barring reporters from the beloved habit of tweeting remarks in real-time.

But, in certain markets, the real-estate group does see some of the air beginning to seep out.
In its House Price Survey and Market Survey Forecast, released Tuesday, Royal LePage cautions the Canadian housing market is “at a turning point,” with some metropolitan areas showing robust growth, while other markets are showing price [...]

Overnight we got some good news on Italian industrial production. Well, get ready to scrap them as according to Italian Trade Union Confindustria, and validating the collapse as predicted by PMI indicators, Italy’s Q2 GDP is now expected to shrink more than 1% in Q2: the worst print since 2009, cementing the country’s “double dip”, and that real-time industrial output in April, now that LTRO has fizzled, is expected to fall 0.6%. Facebook has an Achilles heel and scrappy startups are kicking it repeatedly.
Its mobile experience is terrible.
The app is slow to open; it doesn’t update in real time. Uploading photos is painfully slow.
Apparently this bothers Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who has made improving Facebook’s mobile experience a personal priority.
Startups like Instagram are taking advantage of Facebook’s missed mobile opportunity. By simplifying the social photo sharing experience on iPhones, Instagram got 25 million users in 1.5 [...]
