We can see three low pressure areas showing up as swirls of cloud to the north of Scotland near Shetland, north of Northern Ireland and off south-west England. The centre of the lows show up as cloud free areas, the eye of the storm. The low to the south west has developed quickly through today and will bring strong winds this evening [...]

Britain set for ‘heaviest snowfall of the winter’ in the next 48 hour

Blizzards are set to sweep across the country with chaos expected on roads and transport networks. Up to a foot of snow is likely in places as the harshest weather since the big freeze of 2010 strengthens its icy grip. Government forecasters issued severe weather warnings for much of the country from tomorrow evening and through Monday.

The North and Scotland are expected to be worst hit but the East Midlands will also [...]

Ian Bremmer: European separatism is a red herring

from FT:

As the redesign of Europe churns along in 2013, some still fear that one or more eurozone states will take its leave. Others warn that individual European states will soon crack from within, as less familiar flags appear in places such as Catalonia, Scotland and Flanders. There are separatist pressures building within Spain and the UK, and Belgium’s unity remains fragile as well. But, at least for 2013, there [...]

Scottish Independence – Salmond and Cameron

Salmond and Cameron strike referendum deal.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotlan…itics-19942638

I am a Scot and I hate to say this but as much as I hate Cameron and the Tories this will be the worst thing to happen to Scotland if this happens in 2014. For some reason I don’t trust Salmond.

Scotland Independence?

Agreement between the United Kingdom government and the Scottish government on a referendum on independence for Scotland.

The United Kingdom government and the Scottish government have agreed to work together to ensure that a referendum on Scottish independence can take place.

The governments have agreed that the referendum should:

• Have a clear legal base.

• Be legislated for by the Scottish parliament.

• Be conducted so as to command the confidence of parliaments, government [...]

UK Flooding – Never realised it was so bad!

Just saw this map that outlined all the areas at risk of flooding right now in the UK and by the looks of it, England could be cut in half if they’ve underestimated their predictions. I had no idea the flooding was this bad.

At this rate, Scotland won’t have to bother voting for independance because they might be, literally.

The Orange areas are where the environment agency have said we should [...]

How you CAN forget painful memories through intentional forgetting, study says

Embarrassing middle school pranks, awkward quarter-life antics and terrifying flashbacks from the past – could all be a distant memory.

Researchers at the University of St Andrews in Scotland are testing ways to help people forget their not so pleasant recollections.

Malcolm MacLeod, a Psychology and Neuroscience Professor, had been conducting research on memory and the means in which people can improve their memory.

Forget me not: Most human memories are stored in [...]

Hundreds of racing pigeons disappear in North East

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-tyne-19374950

An area of sky above the North East is being dubbed “the Bermuda Triangle” after hundreds of racing pigeons vanished.

More than 230 homing pigeons were released in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, with an end destination of Galashiels in Scotland, but only 13 arrived.

Now some North East pigeon fanciers say they will no longer send their birds on this route because of the large proportion of pigeons which have gone missing.

A variety [...]

Astronomers discover two groups of galaxies just like ours

The Milky Way Galaxy is a fairly typical galaxy, but when paired with its close neighbors – the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds – it is very rare.

The team, led by Dr Aaron Robotham of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR), and the University of St Andrews in Scotland, searched for groups of galaxies similar to ours in the most detailed map of the local Universe yet, the [...]

May 24, 2012

As the Queen prepares to celebrate her diamond jubilee the royal family is enjoying record popularity, but things could get a good deal more complicated after she leaves the scene, according to a new Guardian/ICM poll.

A mere 22% of respondents say that Britain would be better off without the monarchy, as against an overwhelming majority of 69% who say the country would be worse off. This crushing [...]

There is no safe limit for women drinkers: Stark warning as doctors report alcohol is linked to one in five breast cancer deaths

One in five Scottish breast cancer cases is caused by alcohol – and there is no ‘safe’ limit to avoid the risk.

The warning comes amid a ‘silent epidemic’ of women drinking to excess.

The high level of consumption north of the Border has seen the number of new breast cancer cases linked directly with alcohol soar in the past decade.

‘Silent epidemic’: The high level of drinking north of the Border has [...]

End of an era – Encyclopaedia Britannica goes out of print after 244 years.

Jorge Cauz, the president of Encyclopaedia Britannica, said the company has foreseen “the end of the print set” for some time.

The company says ending the print edition of the 32-volume encyclopedia is the latest step in a move toward digital publishing and expanding its range of educational products.

The Encyclopedia Britannica was first published in Scotland in 1768.

Mr Cauz says the top year for the printed encyclopedia was 1990, when 120,000 [...]

Ash from Iceland volcano could reach Scotland by Tuesday, airlines warned – Reuters

This is why britain is a nation of unhappy, unhealthy, alcoholic slobs:

by Gary

Here’s a few of the ones I come across the most as a guy in his 20s in Scotland:

- You must spend every penny of your disposable income. If you have a job, you must spend your wages at the weekend on alcohol, for yourself and your “less fortunate” friends (students / unemployed). If you get a pay rise, that means you should move to a [...]

The UK’s problem is far different than the U.S. problem.

Largely because their “Market” is more defined by the whole of Europe, Dubai and a utter lack of transferable industries/intellectual properties. We live and work in both the UK and US, and the differences become more apparent when actually there. You realize that Great Britain is clearly trading away the last of its marketable exports (e.g., Cadbury) and simply becoming industrialized by the likes of GE and RR. It’s a [...]
