International study suggests bias could affect boys’ self-esteem
Lower marks ‘could cause pupils to limit their ambitions’
Girls receive better marks at school than boys because they are better behaved, not because they are more intelligent, a study suggests.
Teachers give higher marks to reflect ‘certain student characteristics’ that are not related to ability, the international study claims.
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, which carried out the research, said that the bias [...]

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — It’s a disturbing online sight, repeated hundreds if not thousands of times: girls, young teens or even younger, posting videos of themselves on YouTube asking the public to tell them if they are pretty.
For a 12- or 13-year-old, image is everything. Many students at Haddonfield Middle School said they had seen these videos and found them troubling.
“Well, I feel really bad for the girls, that [...]
My step daughter is a supervisor at a fabric store and has noticed the same attitude in so many young people that they interview (and sometimes hire). It is a sort of “this job is beneath me” mentality. Unjustified pride. I think it’s because many schools have been teaching self-esteem without accomplishments. And television and movies have been teaching unrealistic expecations to us and the rest of the world. My ex [...]
HNR has a well researched piece about attractiveness. Ten points worth noting:
On measures of affect and mood, physically attractive people score higher than less physically attractive people.
People perceive physically attractive people as smarter, more successful, more sociable, more dominant, sexually warmer, mentally healthier and higher in self-esteem than their physically unattractive counterparts. While this ‘beauty is good’ effect is moderately strong, studies show that attractive [...]
The revelation that more than 80 Atlanta teachers admitted to cheating on state standardized tests–with one group of elementary teachers even holding a “party” after school to change their pupils’ answers by hand–has rocked the education reform movement.
But one question has been left unanswered: Why would a teacher resort to cheating in the first place?
The Notebook blog has found a Philadelphia teacher willing to explain why [...]
