The ship, called Azzam, is under construction at a shipyard in Germany, according toSuperYachtTimes.com. It’s expected to measure 180 meters, or around 590 feet — or the size one-and-a half football fields, plus a basketball court.

NAVY BANKS ON STEALTH SHIP AGAINST CHINA

A super-stealthy warship that could underpin the U.S. Navy’s China strategy will be able to sneak up on coastlines virtually undetected and pound targets with electromagnetic “railguns” right out of a sci-fi movie.

But at more than $3 billion a pop, critics say the new DDG-1000 destroyer sucks away funds that could be better used to bolster a thinly stretched conventional fleet. One outspoken admiral in China has scoffed that all [...]

New Navy budgets may sink plans for aircraft carriers

From Washington Times:

On the surface, the Navy’s cherished fleet of 11 active aircraft carriers seems safe from President Obama’s budget slashers.

Conventional wisdom says the requirement to cut $488 billion from the Pentagon within 10 years will not necessitate banishing a single carrier because the president’s military strategy focuses on two carrier-dependent regions: Asia, whereChina is building a robust navy, and the Persian Gulf, where Iran threatens to block international oil shipping.

As Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta prepares to [...]
