The freight train known as The Beast travels from the southern Mexican town of Arriaga up to Mexico City.
And every day hundreds of migrants, mostly from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras or Nicaragua, sit on top of the notorious train, often for days at a time.
It is also known as the Train Of Death. Riding precariously on top of the moving containers, migrants are often maimed or killed if they fall [...]
US Border patrol agents said they had spotted 33 cans of marijuana in a field near where the Colorado River crosses the US-Mexico border.
They believe the cans were launched about 150m (500 feet) into the US using a pneumatic-powered cannon.
The cans held about 38.5kgs (85 pounds) of marijuana, which is worth an estimated $42,500 (£26,500) on the street.

In August alone, $2-billion worth of gold was shipped to Dubai on behalf of Iranian buyers, according to Turkish trade documents. Now, we’ve received news from London indicating that Iranians have purchased at least $10 million worth of silver this year as well.
In September, an additional $1.4 billion worth in gold and silver was carried in [...]

Italian officials have made seizures worth more than £30million as people try to smuggle banknotes and gold out of the country because of the single currency crisis.
That is an almost 80 per cent jump in the first seven months of the year.
Most of the money and goods people are trying to get into the banking safe haven of Switzerland, said officials.
A number of the seizures are made at Rome’s Fiumicino [...]

A couple of months ago we visited Juarez, Mexico, a city right across our border — yet so far away.
The scene was almost surreal: We got off the plane and were met on the tarmac by a convoy of armored cars and open-back trucks swarming with police. The officers were “policía federal.” Like the ones you hear about, they carried machine guns and [...]
Authorities in Arizona unearthed a sophisticated 240-yard drug-smuggling tunnel stretching into Mexico that included engineered support beams, lights and ventilation.
The six-foot-high corridor ran from a store in an abandoned strip mall near Yuma to an ice shop across the border in San Luis Rio Colorado. It provided a direct link to the US for Mexican drug cartels.
The Mexican Army also found a second, incomplete, tunnel under a bathroom sink in Tijuana [...]

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives program was created to send thousands of guns across the Mexico border to suspected arms dealers with the expectation that they would lead [...]
SOUTH Korea has seized thousands of smuggled drug capsules filled with powdered human flesh and is strengthening customs inspections, officials said today.
The capsules were made in northeastern China from dead babies whose bodies were chopped into small pieces and dried on stoves before being turned into powder, a statement from the Korea Customs Service said.
Customs officials refused to disclose where the babies came from or who made the capsules, citing [...]

A new discovery about metal detectors will eventually enable police to count the cash in your pocket and potentially fight crime by sniffing out stacks of hidden bills.
Two physicists found that handheld metal detectors are able to pick up signals from the magnetic ink used on American cash.
When more than one bill is stacked on top of another, the strength of the magnetic field increased as well.
Counting the cash: Metal [...]
A cottage industry has sprung up to take advantage of Apple’s rolling global launches of new products.
Basically, Chinese “importers” pay people to stand in lines in the U.S. to buy the latest iPhone or iPad and then ship the gadgets to China, where they can be sold at a huge mark-up because the gadgets aren’t yet available there.
For example, the Daily Mail just reported that smugglers shipped 200,000 new iPads to Shenzhen alone, where they’re now [...]

QUITOBAQUITO – It was a tour of public lands with splendid scenery, a glib guide – and lethal firepower on hand just in case.
The tour last week – to Quitobaquito Spring at Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument south of Ajo – was guarded by federal officers armed with assault rifles and other weapons.
Why?
“It’s because of the perception that exposure to human and narcotics smugglers is a bad thing for the [...]

Illegal immigration — once comprised primarily of groups of peaceful family travelers — has streamlined into smaller packs of younger, more aggressive men who use the remote desert region beyond the urban border to smuggle people and drugs into the United States, say some agents who patrol this area.
These younger illegal immigrants, some carrying 50 pounds of drugs for several days, travel in groups [...]

Without enough hives to support demand, the U.S. imports more than half of the 410 million pounds of honey it consumes each year.
China was the biggest supplier until the US slapped a tariff on Chinese exports to counter state subsidies. But China came up with a clever way to skirt the duties:
“They’ll ship their honey to another country, say, Malaysia or Thailand or India,” said Troy Fore of the American Beekeeping Federation. ”Then it’s apparently honey [...]
