The United States has double the amount of oil and three times the amount of natural gas than previously thought, stored deep under the states of North Dakota, South Dakota, and Montana, according to new data the Obama administration released Tuesday.

In announcing the new data in a conference call, Interior Secretary Sally Jewell also said the administration will release within weeks draft rules to regulate hydraulic fracturing, technology that has [...]

Best analysis I’ve seen yet: State-by-state presidential election analysis and predictions

This is now the third consecutive presidential election in which I have made my state-by-state predictions for Blogcritics Magazine. In 2004, I was pretty good. In 2008, I was pretty bad. So I suppose we can consider 2012 to be the rubber match, or something.

What follows are the states that Barack Obama will carry easily, along with the number of Electoral College Votes for each state:

California – 55
Washington – 12
Hawaii – 4

Quarter-billion-dollar stimulus grant creates just 400 jobs

Battery maker A123 Systems vowed thousands of new jobs when it received a nearly quarter-billion-dollar stimulus grant in late 2009, but federal job-tracking figures show only a few hundred positions were created before the company joined a growing list of federally backed energy businesses that ended in bankruptcy.

The latest quarterly report on file with a federal stimulus tracking database shows just seven positions created through the grant from April to June this [...]

Secession! Lakota Sioux Nation Leaves The Union!

“President Barack Obama has an unexpected foreign policy problem – in the Western United States. The Lakota Sioux nation has seceded from the United States, according to a story on the anti-American website La Voz de Aztlan.

“We are no longer citizens of the United States of America and all those who live in the five-state area that encompasses our country are free to join us,” long-time Native American radical leader [...]

CNBC: ‘Real’ Unemployment Rate Shows Far More Jobless

While the national unemployment rate paints a grim picture, a look at individual states and their so-called real jobless rates becomes even more troubling.

The government’s most widely publicizedunemployment rate measures only those who are out of a job and currently looking for work. It does not count discouraged potential employees who have quit looking, nor those who are underemployed — wanting to work full-time but forced to work part-time.

For that count, [...]

Judge rules doctors must lie to patients and say abortion causes suicide

In a blow to judicial prudence and common sense a South Dakota federal appeals court ruled 7 – 4 that it was indeed legal to require doctors to tell abortion patients the day before their procedure that they will be at risk for suicide. The warning of suicide that doctors are now forced to give has never been medically or scientifically proven. Because of this, opponents call it nothing but a scare [...]

Nine of the Ten Top States for Business are Led by GOP Governors

As if we need any more proof that reckless spending and high taxes impede economic growth, CNBC’s new survey, America’s Top State for Business, is an indictment of progressive economic policy. It finds that Texas – for the third time in five years — is the most accommodating state for business. And it’s no mystery why.

We already knew that Texas, which, over the years has instituted a number of free-market economic [...]

Coincidence? “UNEMPLOYMENT RATE DROPPED IN EVERY STATE THAT ELECTED A REPUBLICAN GOV. IN 2010″

In 2010, influenced by the Tea Party and its focus on fiscal issues, 17 states elected Republican governors. And, according to an Examiner.com analysis, every one of those states saw a drop in their unemployment rates since January of 2011. Furthermore, the average drop in the unemployment rate in these states was 1.35%, compared to the national decline of .9%, which means, according to the analysis, that the job market in [...]

Blind Native American, 69, claims he ‘had letters KKK carved into his stomach by doctors during open heart surgery’

A blind Native American, 69, is accusing staff at a local hospital of negligence and racism after he emerged from open heart surgery with scars all over his body which appeared to spell out KKK.

Vernon Traversie, from Cheyenne River Indian Reservation in South Dakota, had a heart attack last August and was rushed to Rapid City Regional Hospital.

After surgery he was in a lot of pain. Mr Traversie said he [...]

78% of CA 8th graders fail national science test

By FERMIN LEAL / THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

About 22 percent of California’s eighth-graders tested on a national science test passed, ranking the Golden State among the worst in the nation, according to figures released Thursday.

Scores from the 2011 National Assessment of Educational Progress, also known as the Nation’s Report Card, show that too few students have the skills that could lead to careers in the field, educators said.

Nationally, 31 percent of [...]

Mississippi has highest birth rate among teens in the U.S. – but rates fall for third straight year

Teen births fell again in the United States in 2010 – with nearly every state seeing a decline since 2007.

The state with the most teen births was Mississippi with 55 births per 1,000 teenage girls, according to the report by the government’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention department.

However even that state has seen a drop of 21 per cent over three years.

Nearly every state saw a decline in teen [...]

The top seven “tax-friendly” states for retirees

From Economic Policy Journal:

Robert Powell breaks down the list based on data from CCH and the Tax Foundation, and tells you why they need to be considered:

Alaska: Alaska might not seem like a retirement haven based on the usual factors considered such as, say, weather. But it might be the perfect place for one’s golden years if taxes are a big concern. Alaska doesn’t tax personal income, including Social Security [...]

Study: 8 states get ‘F’ on corruption

Eight state governments received a failing F grade when it comes to transparency, accountability and anti-corruption efforts, while not a single state earned an A, according to a comprehensive new study released Monday.

Michigan, North Dakota, South Carolina, Maine, Virginia, Wyoming, South Dakota and Georgia received failing grades in the State Integrity Investigation – an analysis of all 50 state governments conducted by the Center for Public Integrity, Global Integrity and Public Radio International.

With not a single state getting an A grade, [...]

GALLUP: State polls predict huge Obama loss

Gallup released their annual state-by-state presidential approval numbers yesterday, and the results should have 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue very worried. If President Obama carries only those states where he had a net positive approval rating in 2011 (e.g. Michigan where he is up 48 percent to 44 percent), Obama would lose the 2012 election to the Republican nominee 323 electoral votes to 215.

Gallup adds:

Overall, Obama averaged 44% job approval in his third year in office, [...]

Fact: A total of 2,500-4,650 temporary jobs would created. But most of those jobs are in Canada. Only 500 to 1,400 local Temporary jobs would be created in the US:

Nebraska = 248
Kansas = 18
Oklahoma = 113
Texas = 470

Heat wave forecast this week for most of the central and eastern USA – USATODAY

Technically, North Dakota is not a state

Claudine Zap
The Upshot
July 15, 2011

Meet John Rolczynski: The Grand Forks, N.D., resident has been trying to tell his legislators that an error in the state’s founding document means that technically, North Dakota is not a state.

Sounds like the ravings of a grumpy old man, but as it turns out, Rolczynski was right. News of uncertain statehood has put North Dakota in the spotlight and garnered big [...]

Planned Parenthood of Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota, American Civil Liberties Union and the ACLU of South Dakota said they will file a lawsuit immediately.

If Congress is going to enact austerity measures, it seems like the best places to start would be with the states that are costing us the most to support

by PharmaCan

A good place to look for government spending cuts would be in those states that have traditionally received more government revenue than they pay in taxes, which, coincidentally, happen to be GOP strongholds.

Democrats in the Senate should sponsor a bill that requires spending cuts to take place first in those states that receive more in benefits than they pay in taxes. If the republicans want to cut spending so [...]

GALLUP: Number of Solidly Democratic States Cut in Half From ’08 to ’10
