North Korea plans to launch a satellite into orbit later this month, the rogue state announced today.

“In the announcement attributed to a spokesman for the Korean Committee for Space Technology, North Korea said the rocket would carry a ‘polar-orbiting earth observation satellite’ for ‘peaceful scientific and technological’ purposes,” reports the Los Angeles Times.

If it works, and if it can be built. Nobel prize worthy! 19-year-old girl in Egypt invents a spacecraft propulsion device

A 19-year-old Egyptian university student called Aisha Mustafa has invented a propulsion device intended to offer spacecrafts a new method and cheaper means of energy consumption.
The propulsion device promises chances of using quantum physics and chemical reactions in artificial satellites, instead of the current radioactive-based jets and ordinary rocket engines.

Mustafa’s device is based on a scientific mix between quantum physics, space technology, chemical reactions and electrical sciences.

Mustafa said the inventions generates energy [...]

Billion-pixel camera set to snap Milky Way shots

The European Space Agency says it has completed what it calls the largest digital camera ever built for a space mission – a one billion pixel array camera that will help create a three-dimensional picture of the Milky Way Galaxy.

Set to be launched onboard the ESA’s galaxy-mapping Gaia mission in 2013, the digital camera was “mosaicked together from 106 separate electronic detectors.”  ESA says that Gaia’s [...]
