State pension shortfalls race toward $1 trillion

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Recession-plagued states diverted scarce money away from pensions to pay for more immediate concerns, leaving a $757 billion hole in the retirement fundscovering millions of public employees, according to a study released Monday.

Illinois lawmakers sent a bill to the state’s governor that would allow miniature horses to be used as service animals.

If passed, the small horses, which stand no higher than 32in, would have to be allowed in schools, stores, restaurants, and other public places – anywhere an assistance dog can go.

British workers should be forced to delay their retirements to save the country from financial ruin, according to the International Monetary Fund.

It said the national debt would spiral out of control if the average lifespan in the UK rose by just three years more than predicted.

The organisation warned that the ‘financial implications of people living longer than expected’ are ‘very large’, and could cripple public finances as the cost of [...]

WARNING: Pension age ‘could hit 80′ for babies born this year in ANOTHER Budget raid (UK)… Those who want to retire earlier face years of hard saving. As a guide, to get an income of £18,000 a year today from pension savings requires a pot worth £300,000.

Babies born in 2012 will face 60-year working careers because they won’t get their state pension until they hit 80, experts say.

It has been revealed that a stealthy Budget cut will link the state pension age to soaring life expectancy.

The move was overshadowed by George Osborne’s controversial ‘granny tax’ but its impact could be more severe.

It’s been discovered that an old obscure paragraph dealing with state pension benefits has allowed Texas Gov. Rick Perry to increase his take-home pay by more than $90,000 a year. While slashing programs for the poor, he’s getting retirement benefits while still working.

From NYT: An obscure 1991 provision dealing with state pension benefits was only a few paragraphs long, and it escaped public notice at the time. Even the lawmakers who passed it said they did not know what the fine print accomplished until it became law.

But 20 years later, Gov. Rick Perry — and an elite group of other veteran politicians — can thank Government Code 813.503 for the lucrative pension benefits they are [...]
