The morning commute quickly got off to a rough start for motorists headed into Manhattan Thursday.
An HOV restriction of three or more people was causing severe gridlock minutes after the change went into effect.

On a typical Monday morning a cavalcade of taxis and trucks thunders up Eighth Avenue through Manhattan’s Chelsea district, but as the rain ahead of hurricane Sandy thickened, the traffic on the road thinned.
That made at least one aspect of Sean Ames’s life easier, as his short journey from the Gem Hotel on one side of the road to the Chelsea Gourmet Deli on the other was even quicker than normal.

We warned you back in May that taxi fares could rise 17%, and today as of 12:01 a.m. the new prices took effect.
NYC’s Taxi and Limousine Commission approved the fare increase, which rose from 40 cents for each fifth of a mile (or 60 seconds in stopped or slow traffic) to 50 cents. The base fare will remain $2.50.

Police in north Florida were searching for a man who allegedly went door-to-door at a motel offering to exchange a baby for food.
