Wu Dawei, China’s special representative for Korean Peninsula Affairs, visited Washington last week
Walter Lohman, director of the Asian Studies Center at the Heritage Foundation — a conservative Washington-based think tank — said… Americans are beginning to suspect that China may have an interest in allowing the neighboring [...]

Australia faces a decade of budget deficits, with the annual total set to pass $60 billion in 2023 unless governments take tough action to “share the pain”, a leading think tank has warned.
The Grattan Institute’s assessment comes as Treasurer Wayne Swan confirms the budget has taken a $7.5 billion hit since the mid-year update in October.
“We have seen a really unique event in our economic life,” Mr Swan told the [...]
Canadians use far too much energy and water, and they produce more garbage per capita than any other country on earth, a report from an influential think-tank says.
Canada fared dismally in terms of the amount of waste we produce. In 2009 (the data year on which the study was based), Canada produced 777 kilograms of garbage per citizen. Across all 17 countries studied, the average was only 578 kg produced.

Middle-class workers will take a bigger hit to their income proportionately than those earning between $200,000 and $500,000 under the new fiscal cliff deal, according to the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center.
Earners in the latter group will pay an average 1.3 percent more – or an additional $2,711 – in taxes this year, while workers making between $30,000 and $200,000 will see their paychecks shrink by as much as 1.7 percent [...]

An all-out U.S. war with Iran, including an invasion by American troops, would cost the global economy close to $2 trillion in the first three months and could go as high as $3 trillion, according to a Washington think tank.
A full-scale ground operation to dismantle Iran’s nuclear program is unlikely but the scenario is just one of a handful that a group of nine experts, assembled by [...]
VIENNA (AP) — Iran now could produce enough weapons-grade uranium to arm a nuclear bomb within two to four months but would still face serious “engineering challenges” – and much longer delays – before it would be able to use the material in an atomic warhead, a respected U.S. think tank said Monday….

It would be more effective for Greece if it makes its euro exit in its own hands instead of waiting to be politically kicked out, said Douglas McWilliams, chief executive officer of the Centre for Economics and Business Research.

If a think tank spent a full week brainstorming the best way to foment a culture welcoming of extreme nationalism and a dictatorial regime, they couldn’t do much better than the euro zone. Economies built on debt inevitably fail with chaotic and often violent repercussions.
80 years after the fall of the Weimar Republic, human nature remains the same. The instinctive reaction to pain is to find a cause or scapegoat [...]
Spain’s €100bn bank bailout could backfire on Madrid by destabilising public finances and hampering the country’s access to capital markets, experts have warned.
Prime minister Mario Rajoy today hailed the deal with Brussels as a “victory” for Spain and the eurozone, but analysts said it was unlikely to convince financial markets for long. Mr Rajoy’s claims that Spain’s public finances would not be impacted were disputed, even though the details of [...]
From Zero Hedge:
Yesterday, the progressive “think-tankers” from the CEPR first voiced the idea that it is time for America to finally come to the aid of Europe, because you see, the liberals, ever so generous with other people’s money, have had enough of a sinking financial system brought to its knees by the intersection of a financial system perpetually bailed out at the taxpayers’ expense, and a insolvent global welfare [...]
From FT:
Here’s how to start an argument in Britain. Suggest that far from being inherently flawed, the euro is fixable and could succeed in the long run. Suggest Britain should even consider joining it at some point. This last idea is a proposition with which the majority of British people disagree, strongly. I know this because the think tank Policy Network has today published new polling that tells you that [...]
Asylum seekers from Arab Spring countries and West African nations suffering civil strife surged into Europe last year new figures have revealed.
The Brookings Institution, a Washington-based think tank, said almost two million people have left their homes over the last year as a result of the impact of the Arab Spring across North Africa and the Middle East.
Europe’s largest group of migrants for a third consecutive year was from Afghanistan.

The recent Koch brothers hostile takeover of stalwart Libertarian think tank Cato Institute is instructive in many ways. While Cato certainly does not speak for all libertarians, and many may well disagree with some of their positions, they are one of, if not the most prominent of the think tanks acting in the Libertarian model.
And it’s almost painful to watch the ever present and overreaching Koch-topus slip it’s slimy tentacles [...]

Global economy could endure disaster for a week
Reuters
By Nina Chestney
LONDON (Reuters) – The global economy could withstand widespread disruption from a natural disaster or attack by militants for only a week as governments and businesses are not sufficiently prepared to deal with unexpected events, a report by a respected think-tank said.
Events such as the 2010 volcanic ash cloud, which grounded flights in Europe, Japan’s earthquake and tsunami and Thailand’s floods [...]
Europe’s single currency is almost certain to disintegrate within the next decade, a leading think tank has predicted, with Greece and Italy potentially abandoning the euro this year.
Douglas McWilliams of the CEBR said Greece seemed ‘pretty certain’ to leave the euro and it now looked ‘more likely than not’ that Italy would follow suit. Photo: Bloomberg New

As the euphoria of a Bundestag vote begins to fade and the reality of the need to reduce Greek debt by more than 21% (or whatever the ridiculous number the entirely independent think-tank called the IIF is pushing now), we note that almost perfectly tick-for-tick the price of EFSF bonds today are inversely correlated with the EURUSD. It seems evident that our fears (oft discussed here) over the actual [...]

Joe Biden came to China, saw, and failed to conquer the locals’ ridicule. Punctuating just how “effective” Biden’s visit to China was in order to “reassure that the US is solvent” (no seriously, that;s the name of the article) is a just released article in the Securities Times by Wang Tialong, member of Chinese think tank Center for International Economic Exchanges in which he [...]
Barack Obama is likely to confront the highest unemployment rate that any U.S. president seeking re-election has ever faced since the second World War, a private think tank predicted Thursday.
The Conference Board said continued weakness in the economy will probably keep the jobless rate at a lofty 8.5% at the end of 2012, down only slightly from 9% currently. The level of unemployed Americans [...]
Big cuts in welfare spending made by the Coalition will widen the gap between rich and poor that grew under Labour, economists have predicted.
The Institute for Fiscal Studies, an independent think-tank, said that Coalition policies will increase inequality in Britain by reducing the incomes of the poorest households, which depend on benefits and tax credits for much of [...]

The situation at the quake-hit Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant in northeastern Japan ”has worsened considerably,” the Institute for Science and International Security said in a statement released Tuesday.
Referring to fresh explosions that occurred earlier in the day at the site and problems in a pool storing spent nuclear fuel rods, the Washington-based think tank said, ”This accident can no longer be [...]

That interview with Jim Rickards covers “Why didn’t stimulus work?” He points out because it isn’t stimulus. It is spending. It is debt. It is returning less than we borrow.
You may say but, all the other recessions were ended with debt and spending. Were they? They never got back to where we could pay down debt. They never got back to where we could even remove the spending without sowing [...]
