Alameda County supervisors have really taken to heart the adage that government should run like a business — rewarding County Administrator Susan Muranishi with the Wall Street-like wage of $423,664 a year.
For the rest of her life.
According to county pay records, in addition to her $301,000 base salary, Muranishi receives:

Stocks climbed Thursday, with the Dow higher for the 10th-consecutive session and the S&P 500 within striking distance of its all-time closing high, as investors cheered a better-than-expected weekly jobless claims report.
“This could be the greatest bull run since the 80s only because there’s nowhere else for investors to go,” said Alan Valdes, director of floor operations at DME Securities. “The Fed’s pumping $85 billion a month into the market [...]

According to Bloomberg’s rankings (based on wealth disparity, average unemployment benefits, and overall unemployment pool), and somewhat confirming the food-divide discussion we had last night, the following states are the worst to live in if you are unemployed. Connecticut tops the list with its massive wealth disparity – more than one $200,000 household for every household earning less than $10,000. New York, California, and D.C. are close behind with Oregon and Alabama [...]

Could First Lady Michelle Obama go the route of Hillary Clinton?
It’s only hypothetical this point, but a survey done by Public Policy Polling gives Mrs. Obama the lead over Sen. Mark Kirk 51 to 40 percent, should she choose to challenge Kirk in 2016 for an Illinois senate seat. From PPP.

With three weeks still to go in the fiscal year, the federal government already has notched its fourth straight trillion-dollar deficit, the Congressional Budget Office said Monday.
CBO, which releases estimates each month, said the government ran a $192 billion deficit in August, putting the federal government $1.17 trillion in arrears for fiscal 2012, which ends Sept. 30.
The $192 billion deficit was the worst August on record, though the total deficit so far this year is actually lower than [...]

From The Dividend Guy Blog:
Last week, Canadian banks were posting record profits, beating all analysts’ expectations. 2012 will probably be one of the most (if not the most) profitable year in the Canadian banking industry. Combined together, they racked up $8.2 billion in profit. This is huge, considering the underwhelming economic environment. Definitely, the Canadian economy seems to be under the umbrella of the financial Gods, as it quickly recovered [...]

As speculation mounts over who Mitt Romney will select as his 2012 running mate, one of the favorite contenders insisted today that he may not want the job.
Ohio Senator Rob Portman, whose name most often tops potential V.P. lists, said today that he plans to remain in the Senate for the rest of his term, and hinted that, contrary to popular belief, he is not on Romney’s shortlist.
“I am happy where I [...]

The survey released today shows Obama with 46 percent support, Romney with 43 percent. Single women favor Obama over Romney, 60 percent to 31 percent.
The president is benefiting from a “marriage gap” that may be related to social issues, said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Hamden, [...]

American gold traders see gold prices in a downtrend, and wonder whether the December 2011 bottom will hold as a support level. There is not much to like in the chart of gold prices, as priced in U.S. dollars.
But European gold traders see a much different picture. The chart plot of gold prices measured in euros has now broken its declining tops line, and appears to [...]

It feels almost ridiculous and nearly irresponsible for me to suggest that gold will fall to below $1,430. Personally, I think it has fallen way too much already. In a very short period of time, the value of my holdings in mining stocks have been cut in half, and I have no interest whatsoever in seeing gold tank even further.
But for what it’s worth, I see a [...]

The Head and Shoulders pattern signifies a major trend change. The Russell 2000 and NYSE Composite daily charts completed H&S tops patterns today.

I have commented on these charts frequently in recent days. Well today, the tops were completed on a closing price basis, and this is significant.

From Gold Scents:
It may not seem like much happened yesterday, but a very important event occurred. Yesterday, the dollar index breached 78.65. The reason that is significant is because 78.65 marked the intraday low of the prior daily cycle.
A penetration of that level indicates that the current daily cycle has now topped in a left translated manner and a new pattern of lower lows and lower highs has begun. Any [...]
