Ever been in a crowded place and you can’t get service on your phone to make a call?
Sometimes there are too many phones on your service provider’s network. Smartphones have made the situation worse, because watching videos and chatting on FaceTime hogs the network.
Three carriers just signed an unprecedented deal to try and solve that problem. For the first time AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile have agreed to experiment with sharing network [...]
The clock to unlock a new mobile phone is running out.
In October 2012, the Librarian of Congress, who determines exemptions to a strict anti-hacking law called the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), decided that unlocking cellphones would no longer be allowed. But the librarian provided a 90-day window during which people could still buy a phone and unlock it. That window closes on Jan. 26.
Unlocking a phone frees it from [...]

The cable company Verizon has recently filed a patent for a system that contain audio and video sensors coupled with facial and profile recognition software. That would allow the company to obtain information such as the number people in the room, their sex, their race, what they are doing and even what they are consuming while watching TV. The goal of such a system is to broadcast “targeted advertising” but [...]
WASHINGTON (CBS DC) – Verizon has filed a patent for targeting ads that collect information from infrared cameras and microphones that can detect the amount of people and types of conversations happening in customers’ living rooms.
The set-top box technology is not the first of its kind – Comcast patented similar monitoring technology in 2008 that recommended content to users based on people it recognized in the room. Google TV also proposed [...]
Madonna offered a profanity-laced endorsement of President Obama at her concert Monday night, which involved the singer stripping down to her underwear to reveal the president’s name written on her body.
“You all better vote for f—ing Obama okay,” she told the crowd at Washington’s Verizon center.

Apple filed a court request Monday seeking to ban eight Samsung mobile phones in the US market following a major victory in a patent suit against the South Korean electronics giant.
The request includes phones being sold by AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile to US customers that were found to have infringed on Apple’s patents from its iconic iPhone.
Apple asked the court to ban some of the newer 4G phones from Samsung’s [...]
In its second-quarter report on Tuesday morning, AT&T T -2.77% noted that it activated about 3.7 million iPhones during the quarter, which is down 14% from the April period.
The sequential decline is not a surprise. In fact, some analysts believe it might be a good sign for Apple AAPL -0.63% ahead of its own results, due after the closing bell. That’s because Wall Street is currently modeling a 19% decline in overall iPhone shipments from the [...]

Like other Internet service providers, Verizon is fighting to derail the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) rules for network neutrality. But Verizon has set itself apart from other ISPs with its legal arguments for why the FCC’s Open Internet Order should be tossed out.
In its legal brief filed with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit, Verizon lawyers claim the FCC has exceeded its regulatory [...]
There were no reported deaths as a result of the “total failure” of 911 call centers throughout northern Virginia this weekend.
Residents in the City of Manassas, Manassas Park, Vienna and Fairfax and Prince William counties were told to call alternate phone numbers, send emails or drive to their nearest police or fire station if they had an emergency. Some residents in Fairfax and Prince William counties were able [...]
He may have co-founded the company that became Microsoft’s largest competitor, but former Apple boss Steve Wozniak has glittering things to say about his former rival’s mobile OS.
Mr Wozniak, who co-founded Apple with the late Steve Jobs in 1976, has given a shocking endorsement of Windows’ 7.5 Mango interface.
The 61-year-old, who no longer works full-time for Apple, says of the four phones he travels with (including two iPhones), the Nokia [...]
Peter Misek at Jefferies is cutting his iPhone estimate for the March quarter this morning after worse than expected iPhone sales at Verizon and AT&T.
Overall, Misek is still bullish on Apple. He has an $800 price target, and he thinks iPads and iPhones will continue to be monster sellers.
However, in the very short term he’s worried about tonight’s results. Here’s the key paragraph from a note he just sent out:
A&T and Verizon CQ1 iPhone sales worse [...]

When Verizon reported earnings last week Apple investors zeroed in on one thing: iPhone activations fell by 24% on a quarter over quarter basis.
We have another data point from a U.S. carrier, and it’s only going to make investors even more worried. AT&T activated 4.3 million iPhones, which is a 43% sequential decline.
That means between AT&T and Verizon, iPhone activations fell 37% on a quarter over quarter basis.
If this trend holds across the board, then [...]
Verizon is the only company right now not charging for this. If I recall correctly, AT&T charges $36 and T-Mobile $18.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — Thinking of upgrading your phone with Verizon? Better do it fast.
On April 22, Verizon Wireless will institute a $30 upgrade fee for existing customers who purchase new phones with a two-year contract.
The fee would hit any Verizon customer signing up for a new two-year plan and receiving a [...]
It’s not completely illegal for law enforcement to get your cellphone records from wireless carriers without a warrant. So, they do it. And wireless carriers seem happy to comply, perhaps because they get to charge lots of money every time someone asks for something, and the ACLU has found out how much money this is.
If you’re a law enforcement agency of some sort, you have a nice fat à la carte menu [...]

Verizon’s own CCO admitted that they effectively paid almost no federal taxes:
“Two facts not mentioned in “Where Pay for Chiefs Outstrips U.S. Taxes” (Business Day, Aug. 31): Verizon’s tax payments in 2010 totaled $430 million, and its total tax bill for 2010 was $2.5 billion, including $2.2 billion in federal income taxes. These are documented in our Form 10-K filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Indeed, some tax payments have [...]

CHICAGO (CBS) — Researchers at Northwestern University are developing a smart phone that can sense whether you’re falling victim to depression.
As WBBM Newsradio’s Regine Schlesinger reports, psychologist David Mohr has been adapting phones as a virtual therapist for patients prone to depression.

I was really close to upgrading my iPhone 4 when the 4S launched last year.
Not because I was dying for the upgrade, but because I was getting sick of AT&T’s horrible service in New York. I wanted an excuse to make the move to Verizon.
But for me, the upgrade didn’t make sense. I, like many other current iPhone 4 owners, was hoping for a bit more from Apple.
Luckily, it looks like the next iPhone [...]
