CHICAGOLAND: Bank Robberies Nearly Double In 2012

CHICAGO (CBS) – Bank robbers had a busy year in 2012. The FBI said robbers have hit 218 banks in the Chicago area as of Dec. 31, compared to 115 in 2011.

“Close to double what we had in the prior year,” said FBI Special Agent Joan Hyde.

CHICAGO (CBS) — Chicago Police hope surveillance pictures help lead them to one of three weekend mob attacks on people downtown.

Dozens of police and SWAT officers surrounded an real estate company office in Valparaiso, Ind., on Friday after at least three gunshots were heard. A gunman inside the building was reported to be holding as many as 15 hostages, police and witnesses said.

CHICAGO (CBS) — An expert says just as the Chicago-area’s shattering weather records, we could soon set less pleasant records – the highest gas prices.

As WBBM Newsradio’s Regine Schlesinger reports, Patrick DeHaan, a senior analyst with GasBuddy.com in Chicago, says with an average of $4.37 a gallon, the Chicago-area now has the fifth highest gas prices, behind only three California cities and Honolulu.

Motorcycles, Bicycles Allowed to Run Red Lights Under New State Law

CHICAGO (CBS) — Illinois motorcycles and bicycles will be allowed to run red lights starting in 2012, but only in certain instances.

Motorcycles and bicycles often aren’t big enough to trigger magnetic sensors that switch traffic lights from red to green, WBBM Newsradio’s Alex Degman reports.
