Baroness Thatcher, Britain’s first woman prime minster, has died after suffering a stroke at the age of 87.
Her children Mark and Carol Thatcher announced that their mother Baroness had died peacefully following a stroke this morning.
Speaking to Sky News, Baroness Thatcher’s spokesman and friend Lord Bell said: “We’ll never see the like of her again. She was one of the great prime ministers of all time and transformed people’s lives.”

The Obama presidency is fond of issuing apologies for America on the world stage, but very rarely makes them at home to Americans. White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer has just issued one toWashington Post columnist and Fox News contributor Charles Krauthammer, who last week wrote an op-ed berating the Obama administration for removing a bust of Sir Winston Churchill from the Oval Office when it came to power. Pfeiffer had issued a stinging attack on Krauthammer, alleging that his Churchill [...]

Barack Obama’s White House has been forced to admit that it did return a bust of Sir Winston Churchill to British diplomats, after describing such claims as “100 per cent false”.

Aides to Mr Obama were furious after The Daily Telegraph disclosed last week that Mitt Romney planned to restore the Jacob Epstein sculpture [...]
The White House incorrectly claimed that a bust of Winston Churchill was not removed from the White House when President Obama moved in, insisting with emphatic certainty that it had simply been moved to the residence but then retracting the assertion.
In a “Fact Check” post added to the White House website Friday, White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer scornfully dismissed as “100% false” the “rumor” that Obama had removed the [...]

The UK’s stop-start recovery has been the weakest to follow any recession in the past 100 years, with output still 4% below the level of 2008.
Great Depression – 1930s
The devastating downturn of the early 1930s followed Winston Churchill’s decision as chancellor, in 1925, to hitch the UK economy to the gold standard at an impossibly uncompetitive exchange rate. That left British industry vulnerable to the slump in worldwide demand [...]

Statesmen Start To Simulate Three Stooges – The goings-on in Washington are becoming a global embarrassment to its citizens.
Under the guise of working for the good of the people, both sides are engaged in barely-disguised exercises in venal politics.
The primary purpose of the posturing is to structure the “proposal” in a way that will enable the “winner” to be able to [...]

New Dawn Special Issue 16
The control of the US, and of global politics, by the wealthiest families of the planet is exercised in a powerful, profound and clandestine manner. This control began in Europe and has a continuity that can be traced back to the time when the bankers discovered it was more profitable to give loans to governments [...]

Greater Global Risk Now Than At Time Of LTCM
Sir, The Financial Services Authority claims that hedge fund gearing has decreased (report, May 2) and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York suggests that there is no close correlation between hedge fund returns making the current situation less alarming than in the past (May 3). I believe it [...]
Perhaps Mr Obama was smothered also by his audience, which remained stubbornly unresponsive. For most of the time the President had nothing to bounce off: no applause and certainly no shouts of praise or blame as might be heard in an American church or at an American political rally.
The presidential text sounded as if it had been worked on so hard [...]

Our duty is most distinctly not to monetize – or even be perceived as monetizing – the debt of fiscally imprudent government. Throughout the history of nations, monetizing the budgetary excesses of governments has proven to be a direct path to economic perdition. Having already peeked inside that door, I feel strongly that we must now shut it, lock it [...]

So the first thing to recognize in support of the Empire, which the neocons do here, is to name the potential enemies of the Empire — “terrorists” such as al-Qaeda and Hezbollah (not to forget Hamas, Syria and Iran). The Hannity/Limbaugh line finds every enemy of Israel in every freedom fighter movement. It’s troubling to me that pro-war neocon Stratfor (i.e. George Friedman) has become [...]
A possible Republican presidential candidate suggested in a radio interview that President Barack Obama’s childhood in Kenya shaped his world-view – even though Mr Obama did not visit Kenya until he was in his 20s.
Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee told a New York radio station on Monday that Mr Obama’s youth led him to resent the West, which he said explains why Mr [...]

As Winston Churchill implied in a speech given from the Opposition bench in Parliament in 1947, after the voters had pushed his government out the year before, democracy might be the worst form of government, but he added that it was better than “all those other forms that have been tried from [...]

In 1930 there were all sorts of statements about how it was “all under control” and “prosperity was returning.” Some examples of the 1929 and 1930 idiocy:
“Financial storm definitely passed.” – Bernard Baruch, cablegram to Winston Churchill, November 15, 1929
“I see nothing in the present situation that is either menacing or warrants pessimism… I have every confidence that [...]
