Kofi Annan, who served as a joint special envoy for Syria, is resigning from the post, according to the United Nations chief.
UN Secretary-General Ban ki-Moon announced Annan’s resignation Thursday “with deep regret,” saying in a statement that Annan has no intention to renew his mandate when it expires on Aug. 31.
“I wish to express my deepest gratitude to Mr. Annan for the determined and courageous efforts he has made as the Joint Special Envoy for Syria,” he said.
The resignation comes amid escalating fighting in Syria, and a day before the UN General Assembly plans to vote on a resolution drafted by Arab League nations condemning the escalating violence and heavy-arms assaults by government troops.
