I think I need to take my unemployment comparison back to 2008 - when we were already recessionary by 3 months, to show just how deep into the abyss we are right now, and continuing to descend:

W/Ending ……… 2010 ……… 2009 ……… 2008 ……… 2007 ……… 2006
1/2/2010 … 645,571 … 731,958 … 521,311 … 499,979 … 475,889

Continuing unemployment:
….2010……………2009……………2008
5,479,110……5,317,388……3,290,775

The persons claiming benefits from federal programs are as follows:
….2010……………2009……………2008
…25,771 ………..19,158…………..18,262…..Federal Employees
…34,397………….21,112………….22,902…..Discharged Vets
…11,000……………5,000…………….3,000….RR Retirement
…296,534………….1,168……………………0…Extended Benefits
5,143,410…..1,922,488……………………0…EUC 2008 - Program put in place end 2008.

So, in total the CONTINUING unemployment, actuals, not seasonally adjusted is:
…….2010……………..2009…………….2008
10,990,222 ……7,059,307……3,334,939

Think about that folks, we were already in a recession and those are the numbers back in 2008. The market was in the tank until March of 2009, now in our “spending based” economy, it takes back off in 2009, continuing into 2010. Just one quick question - WHY?

Please note, these are the numbers ONLY for those COVERED by unemployment insurance. Self-employed? Sorry, you’re not in here.
