U.S. Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass, said House Republicans are in revolt against
George Bush but “aren’t serious” about providing an alternative to Treasury’s
$700 billion bank bailout plan. Frank blamed the GOP for the breakdown in talks
and said the first time the Democrats saw the Republican plan was when they were
given one page of bullet points Thursday afternoon. He said on Wednesday not a
single Republican mentioned the plan during three hours of Congressional
hearings. Of Sen. John McCain’s involvement, he said McCain hasn’t indicate
whether he backs or doesn’t back the plan and suggested discussions were more
serious until McCain joined in them. He added any prospects of getting a deal
Friday depends entirely on the House Republicans.
