Deepest condolences to the family and friends of the poor felow. What a waste, what a goddamn awful waste of a young life.
Seems Wallmart has a bit of a history for poor safety management and is also not averse to a little bit of sales price manipulation.
But isn’t it a relief to hear that following the tragedy today, the store was able to reopen by 1.00 pm! Just warms your heart.

ORANGE CITY, Fla. — A mob of shoppers rushing for a sale on DVD players trampled the first woman in line and knocked her unconscious as they scrambled for the shelves at a Wal-Mart Supercenter.
Patricia VanLester had her eye on a $29 DVD player, but when the siren blared at 6 a.m. Friday announcing the start to the post-Thanksgiving sale, the 41-year-old was knocked to the ground by the frenzy of shoppers behind her. “She got pushed down, and they walked over her like a herd of elephants,” said VanLester’s sister, Linda Ellzey. “I told them, `Stop stepping on my sister! She’s on the ground!’”
Ellzey said some shoppers tried to help VanLester, and one employee helped Ellzey reach her sister, but most people just continued their rush for deals. “All they cared about was a stupid DVD player,” she said Saturday.
Paramedics called to the store found VanLester unconscious on top of a DVD player, surrounded by shoppers seemingly oblivious to her, said Mark O’Keefe, a spokesman for EVAC Ambulance.
She was flown to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, where doctors told the family VanLester had a seizure after she was knocked down and would likely remain hospitalized through the weekend.

The long, cold wait for the PlayStation 3 turned ugly on Thursday when customers eager to get in line at a Wal-Mart stampeded, trampling each other in a debacle that left at least one man injured.
Some witnesses said the store’s management set the scene for disaster when the crowd of about 50 people was told to race to 10 chairs for a chance to buy the 10 rare videogame systems the store expected to sell today.

A Wal-Mart store in Mitchell, South Dakota receives a bomb threat. The store managers decide not to evacuate while the police search for the bomb. Presumably, they decided that the loss of revenue due to an evacuation was not worth the additional security of an evacuation:
During the nearly two-hour search Wal-Mart officials opted not to evacuated the busy discount store even though police recomended [sic] they do so. Wal-Mart officials said the call was a hoax and not a threat.
Well that’s OK then.

California Attorney General Edmund Brown Jr and San Diego District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis have announced a settlement with Wal-Mart Stores that will give back customers $3 at the cash register for price-scanning errors.
In the settlement agreement, Wal-Mart has agreed to implement a pricing accuracy program in California for at least four years. In settlement of the case, Wal-Mart has agreed to pay $1.4 million in restitution, civil penalties and reimbursement for investigative costs, and $50,000 to the State Consumer Protection Prosecution Trust Fund.
