On The Modern Obsession With “Optics”

You know who had great optics? Ronald Reagan.

And Reagan could not be elected in today’s increasingly post-television media environment.

Reagan was popular because he was great and likable on TV, but his actual policies polled poorly on their own.

Today, people go on the internet and quickly look up what your exact political positions are.

If your policies are generic post-war conservatism, or worse, you hide what you believe, you can be the most polished and focus grouped politician ever and you still won’t get elected in a national vote.
