Is Paul Ryan Disloyal to President Trump?

By Gabrielle Seunagal

On Monday evening, Breitbart News leaked an audio recording from October in which Speaker of the House Paul Ryan clearly stated that he would “not defend Donald Trump, not now, not in the future.” He continued by informing Republican caucus members of his “real issues” with the soon-to-be President and made it clear that he had no plans to campaign with Mr. Trump. The Speaker’s remarks were made after the audio of President Trump’s controversial comments about women was released to the public. Breitbart’s decision to leak the Speaker’s private remarks is rumored to be engendered by their displeasure with the American Health Care Act, a bill that many Republicans view as ‘Obamacare Lite.

While the recording clearly showcases Speaker Ryan censuring the President, it is worth noting that since the election, he has supported the President on numerous occasions since October. He supported Mr. Trump’s policies to cut taxes, repeal and replace Obamacare, and carefully screen the people who are granted entry into America. Earlier this year, the Speaker made a statement in which he expressed his agreement with the President’s decision to “know exactly who is entering our country.” Paul Ryan has criticized Mr. Trump on certain occasions like other conservatives, but similarly, he had a change of heart with the passing of time and united behind the leader of the free world. Americans should be hesitant about allowing one audio recording to define their opinion of Speaker Ryan.

There is not one person who has made statements that no longer align with their values or notions. Everyone in America has provided commentary behind closed doors only to change their minds later. The only difference between them and Speaker Ryan is while his remarks were recorded and publicized for the world to hear, other people’s were not.
